Getting his start as teenager with The Spencer Davis Group, moving on to Blind Faith and then Traffic, Steve Winwood had experienced great success in the 60’s and 70’s but in the 80’s he was struggling to find that level of fame as a solo artist.
He teamed up with lyricist Will Jennings, who had written songs for Barry Manilow, B.B. King, and Joe Cocker starting writing songs for the album Arc Of A Diver. Jennings said in an interview that the lyric of the song is about realizing that you are all alone in this life and you have to do with it what you can and that it’s up to you be a success.
