This was originally recorded by Canadian group The Guess Who in 1970. A largely misinterpreted song, many including Guess Who guitarist Randy Bachman maintain it is an anti American anti war protest song while lyricist Burton Cummings says it is actually a plain and simple tribute to Canadian girls! The Guess Who went to #1 in 1970 with the song.
In 1999 the song became a huge hit all over again when, Lenny Kravitz release a version of it.
When asked why he covered it Kravitz replied: “I was called by the people making Austin Powers and they simple asked me to cover ‘American Woman,’ which I thought was odd but I accepted thinking it was an interesting challenge and did my best to change it as much as possible while still respecting the original. I was pleased when Burton Cummings called me to tell me how much he loved it.”
