This was recorded in 1977 for Bing Crosby’s Christmas Special. The memorable scene Bing Crosby and David Bowie exchanging scripted dialogue and then singing almost didn’t happen.
Bowie’s appearance on Bing Crosby’s show at the time was described as a “surreal” event. Bowie admits to only agreeing to do it because his Mom loved the legendary vocalist and many speculated that Crosby didn’t even know who Bowie was but his kids sure did!
Complications arose even before they got to the set when Bowie said he didn’t want to sing the Christmas song they had already arranged for he and Crosby to do. The solution was for the writers race off and write a counterpoint melody for Bowie to sing added to the arrangement they already had.
Written in less then and hour and rehearsed in less then 30 minutes their version of Little Drummer Boy/ Peace on Earth has become a Christmas classic.
