In the 80’s while Genesis drummer and vocalist Phil Collins was off doing solo projects his bandmate Mike Rutherford formed a pop/rock supergroup in 1985 as a side project.
Similar to groups like Steely Dan, initially in the studio Mike + the Mechanics were not necessarily a band during the recording process. A long list of session keyboardists, drummers, guitarists, and even lead vocalists often performed on the songs in place of the official band members.
The eventual line-up of Mike + the Mechanics only came together over the course of recording their first album. Featured in that line up was Paul Young from the band Sad Cafe and Paul Carrack of Ace and Squeeze fame.
