The 2017 Emmy Awards took over our television sets last night to celebrate the year’s greatest achievements in TV. “The Late Show” host Stephen Colbert hosted the event. Some of the notable winners include “The Handmaid’s Tale” for Outstanding Drama Series (written by Canadian Margaret Atwood), “The Voice” for Outstanding Reality Competition, and “Shark Tank” (similar to Canadian series “Dragon’s Den”) for Outstanding Structured Reality Program. HBO also did well, with “Big Little Lies” taking home Outstanding Limited Series, “Veep” winning Outstanding Comedy Series, and “Last Week Tonight With John Oliver” taking the prize for Outstanding Variety/Talk Series. See the full list of winners here.
Speaking of the Emmys, US President Donald Trump has never won an Emmy, but an actor portraying him now has. Alec Baldwin picked up the statuette for best supporting actor in a comedy series for “Saturday Night Live” at last night’s Emmy Awards. In his victory speech, Baldwin joked, “at long last, Mr. President, here is your Emmy.”
The mystery behind the “Netflix Is a Joke” billboards has been revealed. During the Emmy broadcast on Sunday, Netflix premiered a star-studded trailer featuring comedians Ellen DeGeneres, Jerry Seinfeld, Dave Chappelle and Chris Rock — all of whom have stand-up deals with the streaming service — that poked fun at its slate of original series.
