On a list of the most critically and commercially successful Canadian songs you would have to find Rough Trade’s “High School Confidential”
It was written by singer Carole Pope and bandmate Kevan Staples although sharing a name with Jerry Lee Lewis song is not a cover it’s an entirely different song but there are some connections to Jerry Lee’s late 50’s rock’n’roll .
The song uses the title of the 1958 film High School Confidential, as well as references which suggest that the song is set in a similar time frame. The lyrics don’t follow the film’s drug-related plot but the narrator does compares the subject of the song a to 1950s sex symbols Mamie Van Doren, Anita Ekberg and Dagmar. This song about unrequited high school lust was a breakthrough top 40 hit for Rough Trade.
