This huge 1983 hit for the band the Police is very often misinterpreted as a love song.
In fact as a musician I can remember at least three occasions when I was asked to perform it as a bride and groom’s first dance.
It is anything but romantic. It’s downright sinister.
As the songs writer, Police frontman Sting put it: “I think it’s a nasty little song, really rather evil. It’s about jealousy and surveillance and ownership.”
