This song by Australian band Men at Work is often misinterpreted as a patriotic anthem.
Lead singer/guitarist Colin Hay has said that song is about the selling of Australia and the overdevelopment of the country.
It is a song about the loss of spirit in that country and the plundering of the country by greedy people. As Hay puts it “it’s ultimately about celebrating the country, but not in a nationalistic way and not in a flag-waving sense. It’s really more than that.”
