New Wave band Nena grew up in the shadow of the Cold War between the USSR and USA. Such was the life of the youth of West Germany in the 80s
In 1982 the Nena’s guitarist was at a Rolling Stones concert in West Berlin when as part of the show, helium balloons were released. As he watched them floating through the air, he imagined what might happen if they floated over the Berlin Wall into the Soviet air space.
He brought the idea to the band and they scored a world wide hit with 99 Red Balloons !
