Newspaper journalist turn local Wrestling guru John Edwards is not only a great promoter of up and coming young wrestlers but also a tremendous champion of the stars of the age of wrestling I grew up on and later became involved with! We had a chat with him about the Wrestling Night in Collingwood event coming up on May 13th!
Only a few years in my broadcasting career I managed to get myself involved in the promotion of Wrestlemania VI in Toronto. Of the many crazy stories that come out of that adventure, I will never forget how much the media at the time and the organizers themselves under estimated the popularity WWF in Toronto. I went to one of the many events that lead up to the big night at Skydome. My guest and I were trying to get through massive crowds that had gathered to catch a glimpse of their heroes when some officials scuttled me and my girlfriend’s 9 yr old little brother into a hotel freight elevator.
To our shock already in the low tech elevator was a massive man who had clearly come from a work out. He seemed familiar but in dressed in casual sweats, a hoodie and no face make up I had no idea who it was. My little buddy however knew instantly who it and whispered to me the identity. Figuring it was “off the clock time” for the performer who the next night would be facing Hulk Hogan in the main event I didnt want to intrude so I remained quite. The polite 9yr old also remained silent however his gaze was permanently fixed on this giant of a man.
In a soft, steady and purposeful voice the man looked down and said. “Are you gonna be in my corner tomorrow night?” The still silent child nodded feverishly. “Good”, he continued,” I’m gonna need all the help I can get, you know who I’m up against!” As the doors opened for his floor he reached out a giant hand to the little boy and they shook hands like blood brothers making a pact. “Thanks” he said then looked up and nodded to me and headed out. Im sure he must have heard through the closing door the two of us cheering with glee having just met the Ultimate Warrior
