A man from Innisfil is lucky that his bank alerted him of a fraudulent deal before he lost money on it.
Police say the man advertised a computer for sale on Kijiji, and received a response where the prospective buyer sent him a bank draft for $2800. The buyer gave instructions that the excess money obtained from cashing the draft was to be given to the man picking up the computer.
When the victim tried to cash the draft, his bank told him it was a forgery. This type of fraud is known as the overpayment scam, where the victim would cash the fraudulent cheque, return the overpayment to the buyer, and then be out the money when the bank calls to say the cheque bounced.
Police are reminding the public to never accept overpayment when selling items online. They also recommend face-to-face selling in a public place, with exact change in cash as the only means of payment.
