This warning is for the customers of Alectra Utilities in Alliston, Barrie, Beeton, Bradford, Penetanguishene and Thornton.
The utility company is warning its customers to be aware of a telephone scam, where Alectra customers are being threatened to have their service disconnected if they don’t provide immediate payment through a cheque-cashing service. The company says they never ask for payment via pre-paid card, and they will not disconnect services after 4pm on weekdays or anytime on weekends or holidays.
Alectra advises the following:
- Do not provide any personal information, including Alectra Utilities or credit-card account numbers.
- Collect any information possible about the caller.
- Contact Alectra’s customer service department during regular business hours to report the incident.
Anyone who believes they may be a victim of fraud or theft can contact police to report the incident.
