A Collingwood lawyer is offering free legal services to anyone who’s arrested for hanging the banner on MP Kellie Leitch’s office roof. The banner, which read “hate puts us all at risk” and used the hashtag #NotMyMP, has since been removed and is being investigated by the OPP. Lawyer Scott Thomson, whose office is located in Nottawa, has said he’s willing to offer his services to assist the person who’s arrested.
Thomson told Simcoe.com, “I think although what they did is illegal, it’s civil disobedience […] Civil disobedience in its true sense, the person acknowledges ‘what I did was illegal and I’ll take the consequences for it, but I want to make a public statement’ so they are exercising their right to free speech and free expression maybe in a manner that contravenes the law but might be considered by a court to be a mitigating circumstance.”
