This David Bowie classic was so unconventional for the time that it almost didn’t get recorded!
When Bowie tried to find a producer to work with on the track he met with some resistance. He took a demo to Beatles producer George Martin who turned the project down, famed producer Tony Visconti didn’t like it thinking it was a ‘cheap shot’ at the impending Apollo 11 space mission. Visconti at least to delegated to then rookie producer Gus Dudgeon.
It went to #1 in Britain and top 20 in the US!
