The late 80s and early 90s was a magical time in Canadian music. Living in Scarborough I would find myself drawn to Queen St West when it came to entertainment. My gang and I would flock to see shows by then up and coming bands like The Tragically Hip, The Watchmen, Parachute Club, Pursuit Of Happiness, Razorbacks, Amanda Marshall, The Bourbon Tabernacle Choir, The Phantoms, Lowest of the Low, Johnny McLeod, Blue Rodeo etc.
One of the mainstays on scene was the Skydiggers. Despite, or in hindsight maybe because of, a repertoire of intelligent, melodic and engaging songs, they still managed to rock out at every show. To me it was more artsy and introspective than the failing stadium rock of the day and yet more musical and celebratory than the early days of the grunge movement. It was perfect!
We cheered in 1993 when Skydiggers won the Juno for most promising band although we had all been singing “I Will Give You Everything” for couple a years at the point!
The Skydiggers which still include founding members Andy Maize and Josh Finlayson bring their celebrated Horseshoe Tavern Holiday Show tradition to Meaford Hall on December 10th! DETAILS HERE.
It was certainly a pleasure to get to have this conversation with Andy Maize….
