In on honour of Halloween Week in the Classic Hit Academy another scary selection. Not only does the song reference the paranormal but back in 1984 the song was at the centre of something the music business finds totally horrifying….litigation!
Huey Lewis of Huey Lewis and the News sued Ray Parker Jr. for plagiarism, stating that Ghostbusters was too similar to their song “I Want a New Drug”. The tip off was that Huey Lewis had been approached to compose the main theme song for the film, but had to decline to work on the soundtrack for Back to the Future. Apparently Ray Parker Jr was asked to write a song like Huey Lewis and News but got it far to close. The legal horror subsided when the parties settled out of court with a confidential agreement. Unfortunately the spectre of legal proceedings fired up again in 2001 when Lewis broke the confidentiality agreement and announced in a TV interview that Parker had paid him off!
