With staggering NHL records in the heyday of my Toronto Maple Leaf’s fandom it’s no question #27 Leaf captain Darryl Sittler would be an idol of mine. It was not only his incredible hockey skills and leadership as team Captain but also his reputation as being a really nice guy!
I know sometimes it’s not a good idea to meet your heroes but in this case it was simply awesome. Thanks to Darryl Sittler’s support of Reliabuild Construction, he was in town for the 5th Anniversary Open House of the Locally Owned and Awesome Collingwood business.
Hundreds turned out to the event and with the exception of a little grey Mr #27 looked almost identical to the images on the long list of posters, programmes and hockey cards he was asked to sign.
If you would have told a 12 year old John Eaton that I would be on the radio with Darryl Sittler, I would never have believed it! In some ways I still don’t.
My favourite off the air moment was when I told him about what an irony it was that being a dyed and the wool Leafs fan growing up in Scarborough that I should marry and life long Habs from Peterborough. He chuckled and signed a postcard for my wife Julie. He wrote on it ” To Julie, My idol was John Beliveau!” How classy is that!!!
