This 1990s dance craze song was ranked the “#1 Greatest One-Hit Wonder of All Time” by VH1. The song was created when lounge act duo Los De Rios was invited to a cocktail party for the upper echelon of Venezuelan society.
Also hired for the event was a flamenco dancer whose skill caught the I eye of one of the duo so much that he began improvising lyrics to her performance. Originally calling her Magdalena it was later changed Macarena in the studio when they recorded in 1992. Over the next four years the song would continually grow in popularity.
It first attained significant success in Spain, Colombia and Mexico. By 1995 it was a staple on cruise ships landing in Puerto Rico eventually spreading to Miami then on to becoming a world wide hit in 1996. Here’s Los Del Rios and Macarena
