Wild Cherry frontman Rob Parissi wanted to write a hit song, and his plan was to copy from the best. He would follow the charts and, as an exercise, he would pick out a song or two to copy each week. After some time doing this, he wrote the one that became the bands one and only hit.
The title came from an incident in the early days of Wild Cherry. They where a Hard Rock Band at the time yet somehow got booked a nightclub that became famous at the time for Disco. An audience member unappreciative of the hard rock sound yelled “Play some funky music white boy”
The song he copied: “Fire” by The Ohio Players (listen especially to the bassline and vocal stylings).
