This song off of John Mellencamp’s album Scarecrow, was a virtual love letter to the history of American Rock’n’roll
R.O.C.K. in the USA is about the emergence of Rock and Roll, and the infamous rockers that were not afraid to take risks for the sake of their music ! Mellencamp felt that artists like Frankie Lyman, Bobby Fuller, Mitch Ryder, Jackie Wilson, Shangra La’s, Young Rascals, Martha Reeves and James Brown were a strong influence on not only him and a whole generation,
Mellencamp’s respect of the rock’n’roll tradition was strong. So much so he actually required his band to learn how to play hundreds of cover songs from the 1960s before recording the Scarecrow album.
