The Beach Boys’ leader Brian Wilson composed the music and his cousin and bandmate Mike Love contributed the song’s lyrics.
The song was inspired by Wilson’s mother’s comment when he was as a child that dogs sometimes bark at people in response to their “bad vibrations”. He used the concept to suggest extrasensory perception. At the same time Mike Love’s thought the title reflected the Flower Power movement that was then burgeoning in Southern California at the time.
