I always thought of West Nile as something far away from home. Turns out, it’s getting closer.
The Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit is reminding us to protect ourself from mosquitoes after a case of West Nile was confirmed in Barrie.
How can you protect yourself?
· Wear light-coloured clothing and/or long sleeves and pants when mosquitoes are out.
· Get rid of standing water around the cottage and at home.
Most people won’t get too sick if bitten by an infected mosquito, but West Nile can cause severe illness in some.
Symptoms of West Nile:
Severe headache and a sudden sensitivity to light.
In very rare cases, the virus may cause serious neurological illness. See you’re doctor if you’re experiencing any of these things.
The health unit is keeping an eye on the situation in Simcoe Muskoka.
