Donna Summer and Joe Esposito where apparently initially approached to sing this song written for a little movie being made called “Dirty Dancing” but they turned it down. Jennifer Warnes had indicated she would record the song but only if she could do the duet with former Righteous Brother vocalist Bill Medley. Medley was approached repeatedly to do the recording, but he turned it down because his daughter McKenna was due to be born and he promised his wife he would be there. After his daughter was born, Medley was approached again, Medley then agreed to do the recording, as the epic finale for what became a huge film the song has become one of the most played songs on the radio and a worldwide hit.
A song by Lionel Richie was initially planned to be the finale song for Dirty Dancing, but choreographer Kenny Ortega selected “The Time of My Life” instead.
