Not only did I get treated to some truly amazing vocal performances by a quartet of fantastic singers but I learned some stuff too. The story of Andrew Lloyd Webber turns out to be a fascinating one. In Theatre Collingwood’s presentation of “Any Dream Will Do” Webber’s story and music are weaved together like a seamless coat of many colours.
I was shocked to find out that last night was not only opening night of the shows run at the Gayety Theatre until July 16 it was the first night the production had ever been staged! Sure, the singers were still “on book” checking their music stands occasionally for lyrics, however, they clearly knew the material well enough to show just how amazing some of Canada’s top musical theatre performers can be. Throughout the show they take great songsand make it magic! Thom Allison, Alana Hibbert, Elena Juatco and Adrian Marchuk sound so good together and each one of them had some incredible breakout moments.
Applause also goes to musical director Chris Tsujiuchi and his band for incredible arrangements that were performed with precision!
This is an inventive show with a truly gifted cast! If that’s what they do for show one I can’t imagine how good the rest of the run is going to be! I might need to go back before the weekend is over!
