As a teenager and budding songwriter in my garage band it was pretty awesome to live a streetcar ride away from Toronto and an amazing music scene. There was so much inspiration and education watching bands like Goddo, Rhinegold (featuring a young Lawrence Gowan), George Oliver, Mondo Combo, Rough Trade, The Numbers, Liverpool, Aerial and many more were all very influential on both my songwriting and my desire to perform.
Today I interview Brian Meissner who was in not one but two of those of bands.
I still recall the band Liverpool who’s amazing recreations of Beatles songs made me feel that with practice even the music of the gods could be obtainable and then hearing that band’s very own song “Dolly” on CHUM AM was thrilling. When Aerials track “Moments Like This” hit the radio it immediately put the two worlds of pop music and “new wave” together for me and as songwriter and that changed everything.
Here’s a sample of Brian’s past Liverpool “Dolly” Aerial “Easy Love” Aerial “Moments Like This”
Here’s what he’s doing now
