Dexy’s Midnight Runners began as a soul band, kinda of a Northern English version of the Commitments. They then named the band after Dexedrine, the popular recreational drug among Northern Soul fans at the time. They eventually traded in their horn section for fiddles, banjos and accordions and the Celtic influence emerged. They had only one North American hit but the song reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 charts in 1983. In fact it prevented Michael Jackson from having back-to-back number one hits. The song spent a week at #1 between “Billie Jean” the week before and “Beat It” the week after.
