We start a week of celebrating the best drummers in pop music with some would say an unlikely choice. The Beatles drummer Ringo Starr is often overlooked on the list of great drummers.
I maintain that if you listen to the complexity of drumming in rock music that was being produced even as late as the early 60s it was mostly 4/4 blues based rhythms. Of course the Mersey Beat twist that the Beatles made worldwide popular was not a Ringo invention he did excel at it. It’s in the mid sixties when Lennon and McCartney starting writing songs that didn’t exactly fit in the regular convention of rock’n’roll that Ringo had to get creative and as a result redefined rock drumming forever.
