This song written by Bob Dylan was inspired by folk musician Bruce Langhorne, who among other instruments used to play a large Turkish frame drum that had small bells attached around its interior, giving it a jingling sound much like a tambourine . Langhorne played lead guitar on Dylan’s release of the song 1965. The Byrds also recorded a version of the song that same year that went straight to number 1 on the charts ! The Byrd’s recording of the song was so popular that it became influential in initiating the musical subgenre of folk rock, leading many other bands to copy their fusion of jangly guitars and intellectual lyrics.
